The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is one of the most sought-after competitive exams in India. Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), this exam serves as a gateway for young aspirants to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as officers. What is the NDA Exam?

The NDA exam is conducted twice a year—usually in April and September. Successful candidates are trained at the National Defence Academy in Pune. After completing their training, they are commissioned as officers in their respective branches.

 

Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualifications

  • For Army Wing: A candidate must have passed Class 12 or its equivalent from a recognized board.
  • For Air Force and Naval Wings: Candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics.

2. Age Limit

Candidates should be between 16.5 to 19.5 years as of the date specified in the notification.

3. Nationality

Applicants must be:

  • Citizens of India, or
  • Subjects of Bhutan or Nepal, or
  • Tibetan refugees settled in India before January 1, 1962.

4. Physical Standards

Candidates must meet the physical and medical standards specified by the NDA. They should also be unmarried and remain so during training.

 

Exam Pattern

The NDA exam comprises two written tests followed by an interview and medical examination.

Written Examination

  • Mathematics: 300 marks, 2.5 hours.
  • General Ability Test (GAT): 600 marks, 2.5 hours.
    The GAT covers English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.

SSB Interview

Shortlisted candidates from the written exam appear for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which tests their personality, intelligence, and aptitude.
